JPEG is famous for one big limitation: it can’t do transparency. Every JPEG has a solid, opaque background, which is why logos and cutouts saved as JPG end up with an ugly white box around them. So a natural question for anyone working with iPhone photos is: does HEIC have the same problem, or can it store transparency? The good news — HEIC handles transparency just fine.
The short answer: yes, HEIC supports an alpha channel
The HEIF/HEIC format does support an alpha channel, which is the technical name for the layer that records how transparent each pixel is. A pixel can be fully opaque, fully transparent, or anywhere in between.
This puts HEIC in the same league as PNG and WebP, and a clear step ahead of JPEG, which has no alpha channel at all. In principle, a HEIC file can hold a logo with a clean transparent background, a masked cutout, or any image where part of it needs to “see through” to whatever is behind it.
What an alpha channel actually does
A standard color image stores three channels: red, green, and blue. An alpha channel adds a fourth value to every pixel — its opacity:
- Alpha = 100%: the pixel is fully visible.
- Alpha = 0%: the pixel is fully transparent (invisible).
- In between: the pixel is partially see-through, which is how soft, feathered edges look natural instead of jagged.
Without an alpha channel, there’s no way to say “this part of the image should be empty.” That’s exactly why JPEG fills transparent areas with a solid color — it has no way to record emptiness. HEIC, like PNG, can.
Why most of your HEIC photos look fully opaque anyway
Here’s a point that trips people up: even though HEIC supports transparency, almost none of your iPhone camera photos actually use it. That’s not a limitation — it’s just reality. A photo of your dog, your lunch, or a sunset is fully opaque; there’s nothing in the scene that should be see-through.
Transparency only matters for images that are designed to have empty areas:
- Logos and icons
- Stickers and emoji-style cutouts
- Graphics exported from design or editing apps
- Product images meant to sit on any background
So if you take a normal photo, convert it, and “lose transparency,” you almost certainly didn’t lose anything — there was no transparency to begin with.
The trap: converting HEIC to JPG destroys transparency
This is where people get burned. If your HEIC file does contain transparency and you convert it to JPG, that transparency is gone. JPEG has no alpha channel, so the converter has to fill the transparent areas with a solid color — usually white or black. Your clean cutout suddenly has a background.
This is irreversible: once flattened, there’s no way to recover the transparent regions from the JPG.
