Why Does iPhone Use HEIC Format?

Apple switched the iPhone camera to HEIC to save storage at higher quality. Here's why iPhones shoot HEIC, what you gain, and how to convert when you need JPG.

Open your iPhone’s camera, take a photo, and Apple quietly saves it as a .heic file — not the JPG you might expect. For most people this only becomes noticeable when a website or a Windows PC refuses the file. So why did Apple move away from the universally supported JPEG in the first place? The answer comes down to a single word: efficiency.

The short answer: storage and quality

Apple switched the default iPhone photo format to HEIC starting with iOS 11 in 2017. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses a compression method called HEVC, also known as H.265 — the same technology behind 4K video streaming.

The result is dramatic: a HEIC photo is typically about half the size of the same photo saved as JPEG, with no visible loss in quality. A 4 MB JPEG might be a 2 MB HEIC. Multiply that across thousands of photos and the storage savings are enormous.

This mattered to Apple for a practical reason. iPhone cameras keep getting better — 48-megapixel sensors, ProRAW, Smart HDR, Night mode — and every improvement makes individual photos larger. HEIC also does things JPEG can’t

Storage was the headline reason, but HEIC is genuinely more capable than the decades-old JPEG standard. It supports:

  • 16-bit color depth — JPEG is stuck at 8-bit, so HEIC captures far smoother gradients (think sunsets and skies without visible banding).
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) data, preserving brighter highlights and deeper shadows.
  • Wide color gamut for richer, more accurate colors on modern displays.
  • Transparency and multiple images in one file, which is how features like Live Photos and depth data are stored.

The trade-off: compatibility

The catch is the reason you’re probably reading this: HEIC isn’t supported everywhere. Apple devices handle it natively, but step outside the ecosystem and friction appears:

  • Windows doesn’t open HEIC out of the box (you need an extension from the Microsoft Store).
  • Android gallery apps often can’t display HEIC.
  • Many websites, web forms, and printers reject HEIC uploads.
  • Older email clients can’t preview HEIC attachments.

Apple tries to smooth this over with a clever trick: when you AirDrop, email, or upload a photo to an app that doesn’t understand HEIC, iOS often converts it to JPG on the fly. That’s why a photo can be HEIC on your phone but arrive as a JPG for the person you sent it to. The system isn’t perfect, though, and plenty of files still slip through as .heic.

How to switch your iPhone back to JPG

If the compatibility headaches outweigh the storage savings for you, you can tell your iPhone to shoot JPEG again:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats.
  4. Choose Most Compatible (this shoots JPG/H.264) instead of High Efficiency (HEIC/HEVC).
